Welcome to the Walking Group

What could be better than a walk up the local hills into glorious sunshine or thick cloud in the fantastic Welsh countryside? We can't promise you good weather but we do offer good exercise, relaxation, fun and friendship. You don't have to be super-fit, or even have done any hill walking before, so why not give it a try?

We usually go out monthly on a Saturday morning, meeting in Pontprennau, Cardiff, at 9.15am (some also leave directly from Newport). The walks typically take 4-5 hours with a journey time of 1 hour each way, and are 6-10 miles with 300-700m ascent. We visit a variety of locations in South Wales and England and even North Wales with our 3 Peaks challenge in 2008.

We take a picnic lunch and usually stop off at a tea shop or pub after the walk to catch up on each others news and view any photographs from the day. Bring walking boots, thick socks, and Wales-proof clothing (ie waterproof jacket and trousers, fleece, hat, gloves, but no jeans).

For more information contact Paul Kirkwood (contact details below). Have a look at our walking gallery to see what we get up to!

Next walk:

Saturday  25 September -  Castle, Court and Wells - Cowbridge.

Walkers may wish to meet at Glenwood Church (Circle Way, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff CF23 6UW) at 9:15am to share lifts and depart at 9.30am. If you wish to drive directly to the start, please meet at Cowbridge Town Hall car park.

This is an 8 mile walk starting from Cowbridge Town Hall car park (997747 OS Explorer OL 151) at 10:15am. The walk leads you through an area just north of Cowbridge. On the walk you will pass the historic Llansannor Court and church, Dr. Salmon's Wells, Penllyn Castle, a most attractive landscape of valley and wooded ridge and two welcoming Vale Inns. For the most part the walk is flat with the odd gentle gradient with one short climb to the wooded ridge.

Phil Silver will be leading; mobile no. 07855 364292

Gear as usual: tough trainers (walking boots if you have them), thick socks, hat &coat, waterproofs (trousers & jacket cagoule, essential), warm clothing (not jeans; they are grotty if hey get wet), lunch, plenty of drink, gloves, backpack.
